In a major relief for aspiring doctors across India, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has approved a massive expansion in medical education infrastructure, with over 9,000 new MBBS seats added for NEET 2025. This unprecedented increase brings the total MBBS seat count to approximately 1,27,906, marking one of the largest expansions in recent years.

Massive Boost for Medical Aspirants

The MBBS seats added for NEET 2025 come as welcome news for lakhs of candidates appearing for the country’s most competitive entrance examination. With 13,15,853 students competing in NEET 2024, the addition of nearly 10,000 seats is expected to marginally improve admission prospects and potentially lower cutoff percentiles.

The Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) has been progressively adding seats throughout the counselling process. In Round 2 alone, 2,720 NMC-approved MBBS seats were introduced, followed by an additional 6,850 seats in subsequent rounds. These additions include 18 newly approved medical colleges contributing 1,200 seats, while 23 existing government colleges expanded capacity by 970 seats.

State-Wise Distribution of New Seats

The MBBS seats added for NEET 2025 are distributed strategically across states, with Maharashtra leading the pack. The state maintains the highest government MBBS seat allocation at 5,900 seats, followed by Uttar Pradesh with 5,350 seats and Tamil Nadu offering 5,200 seats.

Other major contributors include Karnataka, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana, collectively providing over 30% of India’s total MBBS seats. The expansion also includes deemed universities, with nine institutions adding 550 seats to their capacity.

What This Means for NEET 2025 Candidates

Education experts suggest that the increased MBBS seats added for NEET 2025 could marginally ease competition, though the entrance test remains highly competitive. The All India Quota seats (15%) and State Quota seats (85%) will be counselled separately by MCC, giving candidates multiple opportunities for admission.

With over 55,000 government MBBS seats now available nationwide, candidates from diverse backgrounds have enhanced opportunities to pursue medical education. The NMC continues to approve new medical colleges and seat expansions, with final numbers expected before counselling begins.

Aspiring doctors should regularly check the official NMC and MCC websites for updated seat matrices and counselling schedules to maximize their admission chances.
