The wait for the “People’s Electric Car” is finally over. Volkswagen has officially pulled the wraps off the highly anticipated ID.Polo, a compact electric hatchback designed to bring sustainable mobility to the masses. Unveiled on April 29, 2026, the ID.Polo marks a historic shift for the German automaker as it transitions one of its most iconic nameplates into the zero-emission era.
The Icon Reborn: Design and Dimensions
While the ID.Polo draws heavy inspiration from the ID.2all concept, it retains the classic, approachable charm of the traditional Polo. Built on the new MEB+ front-wheel-drive platform, the car measures approximately 4,053mm in length. Despite its compact footprint, the electric architecture allows for a wheelbase of 2,600mm, offering cabin space comparable to a Golf.
The exterior features a sleek full-width LED light bar and a signature C-pillar design that pays homage to the first-generation Polo. One of the standout practical upgrades is the boot space, which has increased to a generous 441 liters—significantly larger than its petrol-powered predecessor.
Performance, Battery, and Range
Volkswagen is offering the ID.Polo with two distinct battery options to cater to different budget and driving needs:
Entry-Level (37 kWh LFP Battery): This version delivers between 116 hp and 135 hp, offering a range of up to 329 km. It supports 90 kW DC fast charging, capable of a 10–80% charge in just 23 minutes.
Long-Range (52 kWh NMC Battery): Targeted at those needing more versatility, this variant produces 211 hp and boasts an impressive WLTP range of 454 km.
For enthusiasts, Volkswagen also confirmed an ID.Polo GTI variant featuring 226 hp, expected to hit the streets later this year.

Tech-Forward Interior
Inside, the ID.Polo says goodbye to cluttered dashboards. It features a 12.9-inch touchscreen infotainment system and a 10.9-inch digital cockpit. Crucially, responding to customer feedback, VW has reintroduced physical buttons for essential functions like volume and climate control.
Key Features Include:
- Travel Assist with lane change function.
- Wireless smartphone integration and charging.
- Optional 12-way massage seats.
- Heads-up Display (HUD).
Price and Market Launch
The headline-grabbing feature of the ID.Polo is its price. In Europe, the hatchback starts at approximately €25,000 (roughly ₹22.5 lakh to ₹27 lakh depending on regional taxes). While European pre-sales have already commenced, Indian buyers are keeping a close watch. Volkswagen India has hinted at exploring the MEB+ platform for the local market, making the ID.Polo a strong contender to lead the brand’s affordable EV charge in India by 2027.
With its blend of heritage, cutting-edge tech, and a sub-€25k price tag, the ID.Polo isn’t just another EV—it’s Volkswagen’s bid to dominate the urban electric landscape.
